Zeppole is an Italian dessert that is traditionally served during the St. Joseph’s Day feast in March, but can be enjoyed year-round. It consists of small dough balls that are deep-fried and then coated with powdered sugar. They are typically served hot and can be filled with a variety of sweet or savory fillings.
Here’s a recipe for zeppole:
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 eggs
For frying:
- Vegetable oil
- Powdered sugar
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Add the flour to the pan and stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a minute or two. Then, add the eggs one at a time, stirring vigorously after each addition.
- Fill a large saucepan with about 2 inches of vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat.
- Once the oil is hot, use a small cookie scoop or a spoon to drop balls of dough into the oil. Cook the dough balls for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the zeppole from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Repeat with the remaining dough, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Once all of the zeppole are fried, dust them with powdered sugar and serve them warm.
Enjoy your delicious and classic Italian dessert!
