Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a popular Italian dessert that originated in the Veneto region of Italy. It typically consists of layers of ladyfingers (sponge fingers) soaked in coffee and a mixture of mascarpone cheese, eggs, and sugar, topped with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate.
To make tiramisu, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pound mascarpone cheese
  • 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso
  • 2 tablespoons rum or Marsala wine (optional)
  • 24-30 ladyfingers
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder or shaved chocolate for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a heatproof bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk until it comes to a simmer. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously.
  3. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add vanilla extract and beat until stiff peaks form.
  5. In another mixing bowl, beat mascarpone cheese until smooth.
  6. Gently fold the cooled custard into the mascarpone cheese until fully combined.
  7. Fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully combined.
  8. In a shallow dish, combine the coffee and rum or Marsala wine (if using).
  9. Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture for a few seconds, making sure to fully coat it.
  10. Arrange the soaked ladyfingers in a single layer at the bottom of a 9×13 inch dish.
  11. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture on top of the ladyfingers.
  12. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.
  13. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  14. Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate. Enjoy!
