Shepherd’s pie is a classic British dish that is made with a hearty filling of ground meat and vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked in the oven. Here’s a recipe for making Shepherd’s pie at home:
Ingredients:
For the filling:
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 cup beef or chicken broth
For the mashed potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef or lamb over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- Add the onion and garlic to the skillet, and cook until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the chopped carrots, frozen peas, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Cook for another 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
- Pour in the beef or chicken broth, and simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and the filling has thickened.
- While the filling is cooking, prepare the mashed potatoes. Place the chopped potatoes in a large pot of salted water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
- Drain the potatoes, and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, and mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the filling into the bottom of a 9-inch baking dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the top of the filling, spreading them into an even layer.
- Use a fork to create ridges on the surface of the mashed potatoes. This will help them brown and crisp up in the oven.
- Bake the Shepherd’s pie for 25-30 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes are golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
- Let the Shepherd’s pie cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Enjoy your delicious homemade Shepherd’s pie!
