Pide is a traditional Turkish flatbread that is often described as a cross between pizza and bread. It is typically boat-shaped and topped with various ingredients such as cheese, meat, vegetables, and herbs. Here’s a basic recipe for making Pide:
Dough Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Topping Ingredients (you can customize the toppings to your preference):
- 1 cup grated cheese (such as mozzarella or feta)
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers
- 1/4 cup sliced red onions
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- Fresh herbs (such as parsley or mint), chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
- Once the dough has risen, divide it into 2 or 4 equal portions, depending on the size of the pides you want to make.
- Roll out each portion into an oval or boat shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Transfer the rolled dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or onto a preheated pizza stone if you have one.
- Spread the desired toppings evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. You can be creative with the toppings and use a combination of cheese, vegetables, and meat.
- Season the toppings with salt and pepper to taste, and sprinkle the fresh herbs on top.
- Bake the pides in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove the pides from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
Pide is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven. You can serve it as a main course or cut it into smaller pieces for a party or gathering. It is often accompanied by a side salad or yogurt dip. Enjoy the delicious flavors of homemade Turkish Pide!
