Gyudon



Gyudon is a popular Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of steamed rice topped with simmered beef and onions. It is a simple and comforting dish that can be easily made at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef (such as ribeye or sirloin)
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 3 cups cooked white rice
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sake or dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 eggs (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
  2. Add the thinly sliced beef to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, until browned.
  3. Stir in the sugar, sake or white wine, mirin, and soy sauce, and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the water to the skillet and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let the beef and onions simmer for 10-15 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the beef is cooked through.
  5. While the beef and onions are simmering, cook the rice according to package instructions.
  6. In a separate small pan, scramble the eggs and set aside.
  7. To assemble the gyudon bowls, divide the cooked rice into four bowls. Spoon the beef and onion mixture over the rice, and top with the scrambled eggs and chopped green onions, if desired.
  8. Serve the gyudon hot and enjoy!
