Sweet and Sour Pork

Sweet and sour pork is a classic Chinese dish that features crispy chunks of pork in a tangy and sweet sauce. Here is a recipe to make sweet and sour pork at home:

Ingredients:

For the pork:

  • 1 lb. boneless pork shoulder, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup of cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1/4 cup of rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Add the beaten egg and mix well. Add the pork pieces and toss to coat evenly.
  2. In a wok or large skillet, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the pork pieces in batches and fry until they are golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Remove the pork with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the ketchup, rice vinegar, brown sugar, chicken broth, soy sauce, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  4. Drain most of the oil from the wok or skillet, leaving about 1 tablespoon. Add the red and green bell peppers, onion, and garlic and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  5. Pour the sauce into the wok or skillet and stir until it thickens and becomes bubbly.
  6. Add the fried pork pieces to the wok or skillet and stir until they are coated with the sauce.
  7. Serve the sweet and sour pork over steamed rice.
