Taiyaki

Taiyaki is a popular Japanese snack that originated in Tokyo. The name “taiyaki” literally translates to “baked sea bream,” but the snack is actually a fish-shaped cake filled with sweet red bean paste or other fillings like chocolate, custard, or cheese.

History: Taiyaki was first invented in Tokyo during the Meiji era (1868-1912). At that time, a fish-shaped cake called “oyaki” was popular in the region, which was made with wheat flour and stuffed with various fillings. However, a new kind of oyaki with a fish-shaped mold was created, and it was named “taiyaki” because it resembled a sea bream fish. Taiyaki soon became a popular street food in Tokyo and spread throughout Japan, where it is now a staple of Japanese cuisine.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk

  8. Close the mold and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
  9. Remove from the heat and serve hot.

Its unique fish-shaped design and sweet filling make it a popular street food in Japan and a favorite among foodies everywhere. Whether you prefer the classic red bean paste filling or something more adventurous, taiyaki is a must-try treat.
