Lo Mein

Lo Mein is a popular Chinese dish consisting of stir-fried noodles, vegetables, and often some type of protein. It is a versatile dish that can be customized with different ingredients and sauces. Here’s a basic recipe for making Chicken Lo Mein:

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces (225 grams) lo mein or egg noodles
  • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 cup sliced vegetables (such as bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, and snow peas)
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook the noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), and sesame oil. Set the sauce aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced chicken and stir-fry until it is cooked through and no longer pink. Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
  4. In the same pan, add another tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the sliced vegetables to the pan and stir-fry for a few minutes until they are slightly tender but still crisp.
  6. Return the cooked chicken to the pan and add the cooked noodles. Pour the sauce over the ingredients and toss everything together to coat the noodles and vegetables evenly. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to heat through.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste, if needed. Add the chopped green onions and give it a final toss.
  8. Remove the pan from heat and transfer the Chicken Lo Mein to serving plates or bowls.

Chicken Lo Mein can be enjoyed as a standalone dish, or you can serve it with additional soy sauce or chili sauce on the side for extra flavor. You can also customize the recipe by adding other ingredients such as shrimp, beef, or tofu, and experimenting with different vegetables and sauces.
