Chicken biryani is a delicious and popular dish in South Asian cuisine. It is a rice-based dish that is made with aromatic spices, basmati rice, and chicken pieces. Here’s a basic recipe for chicken biryani:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 2 pounds bone-in chicken pieces
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons ginger garlic paste
- 2 teaspoons garam masala powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water
- 3 tablespoons oil or ghee
- Saffron strands (optional)
- Fried onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add chicken pieces and cook until the chicken is no longer pink. Add ginger garlic paste and cook for another minute.
- Add yogurt, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt to the pot. Mix well and cook for another 5-7 minutes.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Mix well.
- Add water and bring the mixture to a boil. Lower the heat and let it simmer until the rice is cooked and the water has been absorbed.
- If using saffron, soak a few strands in warm milk and pour over the biryani. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
- Garnish with fried onions (if using) and serve hot.
