Tiramisu is a popular Italian dessert that originated in the Veneto region of Italy. It typically consists of layers of ladyfingers (sponge fingers) soaked in coffee and a mixture of mascarpone cheese, eggs, and sugar, topped with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate.
To make tiramisu, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 6 egg yolks
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pound mascarpone cheese
- 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso
- 2 tablespoons rum or Marsala wine (optional)
- 24-30 ladyfingers
- Unsweetened cocoa powder or shaved chocolate for dusting
Instructions:
- In a heatproof bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy.
- In a saucepan, heat milk until it comes to a simmer. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously.
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and let cool.
- In a mixing bowl, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add vanilla extract and beat until stiff peaks form.
- In another mixing bowl, beat mascarpone cheese until smooth.
- Gently fold the cooled custard into the mascarpone cheese until fully combined.
- Fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until fully combined.
- In a shallow dish, combine the coffee and rum or Marsala wine (if using).
- Dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture for a few seconds, making sure to fully coat it.
- Arrange the soaked ladyfingers in a single layer at the bottom of a 9×13 inch dish.
- Spread half of the mascarpone mixture on top of the ladyfingers.
- Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone mixture.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder or shaved chocolate. Enjoy!
